The Chicago-Luzern Exchange
Josh Berman - cornet
Keefe Jackson - tenor saxophone
Marc Unternaeher - tuba
Frank Rosaly - drums
The Chicago Luzern Exchange consists of three musicians from Chicago:
Josh Berman (cornet), Keefe Jackson (tenor sax), Frank Rosaly (drums)
and one from Switzerland: Mark Unternahrer (tuba). The ensemble formed
when the Chicagoans met tubaist Marc Unternaeher, a native of the Swiss
city of Luzern, who was spending five months in Chicago in 2002 as
part of a "sister cities" program. With Berman (a native Chicagoan),
Jackson (originally from Arkansas), and Rosaly (from Arizona but a
Chicagoan since 2001) he realized he had met musicians with whom he
found common cause. Their first album together Several Lights,
recorded for Delmark Records on a later visit in 2005, was widely
reviewed as one of the best records of 2005. Three fourths of this
quartet appeared at Woodland Pattern last year as part of the Keefe
Jackson’s Fast Citizens.
On the group's Delmark recording Several Lights (2005):
"... the players deliver feather-stroke free improvisation that's so
deft and intuitive is feels almost composed, casually combining the
muted tones and understated gestures of 50s west-coast jazz with
thoroughly contemporary rumbles, snorts, and whinnies."
Peter Margasak - CHICAGO READER
" . . . a music that is jazzlike in a number of ways but also is more
or less measureless, improvised from scratch and without
pre-determined harmonic or structural frameworks.
Oh, yes, it is a music that works, is expressive, and gives pleasure
- whichever you prefer or all those things at once. Also, it is both
new and free - or perhaps that should be 'new' and 'free' -- in ways
that touch upon the other good things mentioned above. "
Larry Kart, author of Jazz In Search of Itself
