Woodland Pattern is pleased to join in the celebration of saxophonist/pianist/composer Steve Nelson-Raney's 65th birthday.
Steve Nelson-Raney is recognized worldwide for his virtuoso technique on soprano saxophone. In directing his own label, Cody Arts, he has made solo performance and recording a significant part of his work as an artist and musician beginning with his 1989 LP Some Solo Piano. Since then, he has self-produced an impressive string of handmade and uniquely packaged compact discs including the solo soprano saxophone CD Summer 1994 and, most recently, Bolden Cavern, featuring solo tenor saxophone improvisations. Since the early 1990s he has been an undiminished force in Milwaukee's new music and jazz scene and is one of Milwaukee's finest and most original saxophone players.
For this performance, Steve will play a set of compositions for solo soprano saxophone and then join with Chris Burns for a second set. The two have been playing as a duo for the last several years.
Christopher Burns improvises on guitar and laptop and composes instrumental chamber music. He teaches music composition and technology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, leads the Milwaukee Laptop Orchestra (MiLO), and is the artistic director of the Unruly Music series in Milwaukee.
This concert is brought to you by the Alternating Currents Live series, broadcast on WMSE (91.7) FM, Milwaukee.
