The 2008 Woodland Creatures Summer Camps
Poems and photos from the two Summer Camps Woodland Pattern Book Center offered this year.
Woodland Pattern's Urban Youth Literary Arts Program offered two Summer Poetry Camps to thirty-nine students in the month of July. These thirty-nine students were taught by Milwaukee writers. They met with local artists from areas such as yoga, theater, the visual arts, and bookmaking each day to enhance their writing and performance skills. In addition, each day of camp ended with an inspirational field trip to places such as The Milwaukee Art Museum, The Audubon Nature Center, and The Milwaukee Ballet. At the end of each camp the students gave a reading in Woodland Pattern's gallery to family and friends. Each student received an Anthology of their classmates' work, and took books off the Woodland Pattern shelves to read throughout the summer.

Revolution
You will not be hearing gun
shots.
You will not sit in the house
and miss school.
You will not work late.
You will not walk in the house any time
or talk any way.
You will not hear about people
dyin'.
You will not see young boys walking
selling weed and they pants below
their waist.
You will not hear 13 year old
females getting pregnant.
You will not see so many
black men in jails, behind
cell rather than in college.
You will see everyone walking
across the stage.
The Revolution will not
be televised.

I'm so Good
I'm so cool that I saw my grandpa's
dad's grandpa get the spank of life.
I'm so good that I cut a
continent in half with a knife.
I'm so strong that I built the
pyramids with my bare hands.
I'm so talented that when I play my
trumpet, the band is frightened.
I'm so good that when I breath
god's chest tightens.

I Wish
Take my soul in your hands
for love is all I want.
Run over the hilltops with me
be sure not to taunt.
Share the passion for me
as I feel the same for you.
Teach them to see
our love so true.
Take my soul in your hands
and hold me to your heart.
Even at the time of midnight
our love is not dark.
Sing a song more beautiful than birds.
Show your passion with the
simple words.
I love you
Take my soul
my heart
my love
for that is all I think of.
Show me that your love is true
and I will do the same for you
That is what I wish for
just passion and love.
Grant my wish oh please
Lord above
hear me plead.
Know what I dream
let sun smile upon us.
Oh lord that is what I wish
let him share his love for me
give us first kiss.

Pablo Neruda
I died in the hospital,
my heart was broken,
speaking my last words ever spoken,
my friend was dead,
and I, out of bed,
in the stairways,
there I saw my wives eyes,
a tears dropped when she started to cry.
I said my last words with loyalty,
'your only danger here is poetry,'
and now out of breath,
closed my eyes and faced my death.

Dream'
I went to a dock and got on a small boat where it took me across a lake, but slowly with wind blowing elegantly, swiftly and the sun glowing and shining brighter than I had ever seen before. All I hear is screeching seagulls from above me. Then four minutes later, I fainted from dehydration. An hour passed by when I woke up. A person that had been roaming the boat splashed me with water. I woke up to see where I was, on a shore of a pretty jungle. Palm trees with coconuts and bananas! You could smell them so sweet and juicy. Then, the wonderful waterfall made it look all so real and nice.

Sunlight turning to moonlight
Sunlight turn to moonlight
at the midnight hour.
People gone except for me.
I see homes asleep,
happy and warm with
their families. The midnight
hour turns to 9:00am
people awake with
dreams in their heads
to tell their families when
they awake from bed. Except
for me because
I have been awake all
night because I had
to become a person
a troubled
dreamer.

I Am
I am Emily Dickinson
Because the poems have meaning
It's like the poems are speaking
And that is who I want to be.
Because they bring inspiration to me
If only the world could see.
I want to make poems with life
And make it go to people's hearts
And make more poetry start.
And that is who I want to be
And make people feel love
And make them know
And make answers come up
Or below.

Classical Dress
As graceful as a
person, as slim as a
shoe, I am a classical
tutu. With dark reds
and blacks as night,
I dance at the walls at
the speed of light.
With shadows and sounds
as I spin
around letting myself go.
