Dave Rempis & Russ Johnson: Solos & Duets

Dave Rempis first came to international attention in his years with The Vandermark Five. During that period he also began to perform in many Chicago-based groups and international collaborations for which he’s currently active, including The Rempis Percussion Quartet, The Engines, Ballister, Rempis/Abrams/Ra, Wheelhouse, The Rempis/Rosaly Duo, and  The Rempis/Daisy Duo. Past collaborations have included performances with Peter Brotzmann, Hamid Drake, John Tchcai, Roscoe Mitchell, Pall Nilssen-Love, and Joe McPhee.  Aside from performing, Rempis is also active as a presenter as curator for a weekly series at Elastic Arts Foundation in Chicago and in the presenter’s collective Umbrella Music.

Trumpeter Russ Johnson is a recent Midwest transplant after spending 23 years as an important member of New York City’s jazz community. He has 7 recordings as a leader or co-leader and performed on more than 75 recordings as a sideman. Russ has worked alongside many of the legendary figures in jazz including Lee Konitz, Steve Swallow, Bill Frisell, and Joe Lovano. In addition, Russ has recorded and/or
performed with a long list of the most prominent musicians currently on the international jazz scene, including Myra Melford, Ken Vandermark, and Tony Malaby. He most recently performed at Woodland Pattern in a trio with Chicago percussionist Mike Reed and bassist Jason Roebke.

Please note the 6 PM start time to allow folks to attend both this concert, and an 8:30 performance of the Mazzerella / Håker Flaten / Ra Trio at Sugar Maple.
