Readings from Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from Madison and Milwaukee High Schools, featuring readings from Aziz Kamal, Bibi Sadeeqa Sulaimankhel, and Juweriya Hassen. Hosted and moderated by Madison Poet Laureate, Oscar Mireles.
Authors Aziz Kamal, Bibi Sadeeqa Sulaimankhel, and Juweriya Hassen will each read an excerpt from Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from Madison and Milwaukee High Schools. It’s an honest and inspiring anthology of 30 personal essays written by Wisconsin immigrant high school students attending James Madison Memorial High School in Madison and Pulaski High School in Milwaukee. The event will be moderated by Madison Poet Laureate, Oscar Mireles.
This event also includes a travelling exhibit inspired by the book, Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from Madison and Milwaukee High Schools. It consists of 17 immigrant youth from Pulaski High School in Milwaukee, their 200-word bio, a quote, and a QR code that viewers scan with a mobile device to watch and listen to the first-person video story. This exhibition will be on display in our gallery for this one-day-only Milwaukee stop!
"The power of every individual lies in their story and this rings especially true in Green Card Voices. I was moved and inspired by the stories of young immigrants who call Wisconsin home. Their narratives are a powerful example of what makes America a beacon of hope and opportunity for so many. Given the growing anti-immigrant climate, their stories serve as an important reminder of how much immigrants shape and strengthen America’s identity. Their storytelling should deepen our empathy and understanding of the immigrant experience. I am proud of Milwaukee’s rich history of creating diverse communities where immigrants prosper. Milwaukeeans and Madisonites know the unique individuals who enrich our communities, and Green Card allows others to see it." —U.S. Representative Gwen Moore
Green Card Voices is a nonprofit organization born from the idea that the broad narrative of current immigrants should be communicated in a way true to each immigrant’s story. Green Card Voices seeks to be a new lens for those in the immigration dialogue, and aspires to build a bridge between immigrants, non-immigrants, and advocates from across the country by sharing the first-hand immigration stories of foreign-born Americans. By helping us see the ‘wave of immigrants’ as individuals, with interesting stories of family, hard work, and cultural diversity.
