Visionary Narratives: A Workshop in Drawing Inspiration with Laurence Ross.
“Drawing a blank” can be one of the more daunting challenges of writing, but fortunately none of the traditional Tarot cards are blank. As William Blake wrote in “Auguries of Innocence”: “To see a World in a Grain of Sand / And a Heaven in a Flower, / Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand / And Eternity in an hour.” Our experiences—and the cards—are full of resonances, and if we look closely, patterns emerge. This workshop will explore the use of Tarot as a tool for becoming “unstuck” in a current project or for generating entirely new material. We will begin by putting aside any formal training we may have, relying instead on our intuition and performing associative exercises with card imagery. After working with the cards, we will read and discuss pieces of writing that use the ancient archetypes of Tarot to illuminate present-day quandaries. Finally, we will draft and share our own short prose or poetry pieces, using the cards as a catalyst. This workshop is open to any genre and is ideal for writers looking to refresh, reinvigorate, or refocus their practice. No prior knowledge of Tarot needed.
Laurence Ross is a Baltimore-based cultural critic, writer, and educator. He received an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alabama and has published essays and reviews in literary journals such as Brevity, Gaga Stigmata, and the Georgia Review as well as the Huffington Post. Ross lived in New Orleans for six years, where he began his Tarot studies at the New Orleans School of Esoteric Arts and was a frequent contributor to Pelican Bomb, a regional publication dedicated to the Louisiana arts community. He also served as the Director of P.3Writes, an educational program in conjunction with U.S. Art Triennial Prospect New Orleans.
