About THE SEPARATION OF SOCIETY
This footage was captured in June 2020, in the weeks following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. It documents the overnight transformation of the artist’s neighborhood, interlacing an interview with the artist’s grandmother, a resident of the community for approximately 70 years. The location shown is now known as George Floyd Square, capturing the artist’s first visit to the spot where George Floyd took his final breaths. While the piece seeks to convey the complex and painful emotions felt at the time, it also offers a historical context for the present moment. Through nontraditional narrative forms, the artist investigates fragmentation of time and the multiplicity of perspectives, employing original footage, archival material, and improvisational editing techniques. This work engages with themes of racism, community, family history, and home—inviting viewers into a layered, open-ended visual essay that challenges linear storytelling, favoring poetic, associative structures that evoke emotion and reflection.
